When you pray, move your feet

An African Proverb I learnt just the other day
Spoke to me in several ways…

It got me thinking about the number of times
I’ve sat in the quiet and thought to myself
Of the many wonderful things I wish I could have.
At times I imagine another me in another life
If only I had this and a little more of that
I guess in very many ways or maybe in truth
These thoughts of mine, though uttered within
were really a way of saying a prayer

An African Proverb I learnt just the other day
Spoke to me in several ways…

It spoke to me of a journey from one point to another
Reminded me that if nothing changes, nothing changes
If all I am is passive and no movement is made,
If the sun rises and sets
Finding me in one position and leaving me so
If my prayers remain just that, just thoughts uttered within
And my feet are planted, but growing no roots

An African Proverb I learnt just the other day
Spoke to me in several ways…

It said, “When you pray, move your feet.”
Don’t just be quiet and think to yourself
Don’t just wish to have many wonderful things
Don’t just imagine what another life could be
Don’t go through the motions, do more than just that
“When you pray, move your feet.”
Begin the journey and embrace the change
Change your speech and speak the change
Take its easy but break the mould
Refuse the laze, push past the pause
Greet the sun in a whole new way
Tell the dawn to get to work
And as it departs, know this for sure
Tomorrow it will bring with it a whole new change

An African Proverb I learnt just the other day
Spoke to me in several ways…
